Adreno Corticotropic Hormone (ACTH), EDTA Plasma*
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulates cortisol production by the Adrenal glands. The ACTH test helps assess adrenal and Pituitary gland function and detect hormonal disorders like Cushing’s disease or Addison’s disease. ACTH function: ACTH is a hormone produced by the Pituitary gland gland that stimulates the Adrenal glands to produce cortisol — a vital hormone regulating stress, Metabolism, and immunity. Cortisol helps the body manage physical and emotional stress, maintain blood sugar levels, and regulate blood pressure.
Test significance: The ACTH test is used to diagnose disorders related to cortisol production, such as Cushing’s disease (hypercortisolism) or Addison’s disease (hypocortisolism). Elevated ACTH levels may indicate Pituitary gland or Adrenal dysfunction, while low levels may point to Adrenal Insufficiency.
Diseases: High ACTH levels may indicate Cushing’s disease, Pituitary gland tumors, or ectopic ACTH syndrome. Low levels suggest Adrenal Insufficiency or long-term corticosteroid use.
