Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulphate (DHEAS), Serum
Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) is a hormone produced by the Adrenal glands, acting as a precursor to testosterone and estrogens. The DHEAS test helps diagnose adrenal gland disorders and Hormonal imbalances. DHEAS function: DHEAS is a steroid hormone produced by the Adrenal glands and, to a lesser extent, by the ovaries in women and the testes in men. It serves as a precursor to testosterone and estrogens, which are involved in the development of secondary sexual characteristics and sexual function regulation. DHEAS levels typically decline with age.
Test significance: The DHEAS test is used to diagnose conditions related to excess androgens (male 40007), such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Adrenal tumors, and congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia. High DHEAS levels in women can lead to Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) and Menstrual Irregularities.
Diseases: Elevated DHEAS levels may indicate Hyperandrogenism, Adrenal tumors, or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Low levels may be associated with Adrenal Insufficiency, aging, or Hypopituitarism.
