Transferrin, Serum

Transferrin is a protein that transports iron in the body. The transferrin test helps assess iron stores and diagnose Anemia, iron deficiency, and iron Metabolism disorders.

Transferrin function: Transferrin is the main protein that binds and transports iron from the Intestines, into the bloodstream and to organs where it is needed, including the Bone marrow for red blood cell production. The level of transferrin in the blood is closely related to the amount of iron in the body. When iron levels decrease, transferrin levels increase to maximize iron absorption from food. The transferrin test is used to assess iron deficiency and iron stores.
Test significance: The transferrin test helps diagnose iron deficiency Anemia and other iron Metabolism disorders, such as iron overload (hemochromatosis). It is often ordered alongside other iron tests, such as ferritin and serum iron levels, to fully evaluate the body’s iron status. Elevated transferrin levels may indicate iron deficiency, while decreased levels may be a sign of chronic Inflammation or Liver, disease.
Diseases: Elevated transferrin levels are associated with iron deficiency Anemia, while decreased levels may indicate Inflammation, Liver, disease, or iron overload.
